My mouse goes crazy and then freezes as well as gmail load freeze

I have a Dell latitude D600 running XP, firefox and gmail. In the past week since loading the firefox 3.6 upgrade at first my mouse would freeze on gmail or not select compose email etc. Now my touchpad mouse goes crazy or freezes on boot up before Firefox is started. I reboot 3 or 4 times and it may settle down but gmail still freezes. I have uploaded Opera browser and my mouse works. I have plugged in a PS2 mouse and it works OK except on gmail I would like to go back to Firefox but i am not technically capable of carrying out deep computer software manipulation. 

I do use scroogle as a home page. I do not want to revert to outlook or IE.

Can some clever person please help?
