how can I customize url and search fields to remove search engine dropdown?

any0585

How can I customize url and search fields to remove the search engine dropdown, and ideally make the URL fields ONLY work with URLs and the search field only work with my default search engine?

A recent update has completely broken my muscle memory: I'm used to typing Cmd-L to move to the URL field, then a single tab to move to the search field, where I immediately start typing.

Now, that single tab moves me to the search engine dropdown, which I don't even want to use, so every time I try to search I have to stop and back up and it's badly affecting my workflow.

How can I either change the tab order or just get rid of the dropdown completely? If I want to use a different search engine, I can always just go to their page instead of using the search bar.

Also, is the URL field now exactly the same as the search field? I really want them to behave differently - I don't want to touch search if all I'm doing is re-visiting a URL in my history. Is there a way to have a URL field that ONLY works with URLs and avoids search, and a separate search field that works with my default search engine?

Thanks for your help.

I'll skip ahead a bit, and ask if you need to stay on the 153 ESR version for the next year per se — as this is something that has been simplified in newer releases, and CMD–L + Tab now skips the dropdowns and goes straight to the text input:

Thanks. I'll see whether I can use one of the newer releases. Do you mean something like 157 or 158 on the regular Firefox release channel?

Do yuou happen to know the answer to my other question about whether the URL field is exactly the same as the search field?

I don't have the exact version number offhand, but since you describe the old tab stop items behavior on 153 I guess it was improved somewhere during 154 or 155 — the capture I posted above is from present day Release 158.

In case you wanted to stay on the 153 for time being there would be internal preferences and userstyle customizations necessary (out of scope here, but you might be able to research various customization communities how to remove the dropdowns etc.), but IIRC it was possible back then with custom code.

No, the two boxes are not the same. There's loads of sync/suggest functionality plugged into addressbar (that you can see in settings, enabling/disabling as you see fit), whereas search box has extra goodies on the side of discovering site search metadata etc. There is a way to internally configure the addressbar to not hand off to search engines, e.g. in support.mozilla.org/questions/1117539 if you prefer so.
