ISP help has lost all previous e-mails included family history files

In short the tech support erased the e-mail settings and effectively made a new profile on my parents computer.

I can go into the original profile and see the size of the inbox confirming that the old e-mails still are present but I am not able to get Thunderbird to display them. when opened normally. I have even attempted to move the files manually into the new profile local folder in attempts to recover them. I have spent allot of hours trying to get access to recover the family history files that had not yet been backed up and are no longer replaceable.

I have since copied the mail directory from in the profile and brought it to my own computer but I am still unable to get the original e-mails to display. System restore will not work in any mode and I have run out of ideas. Does anyone have any suggestions on a program that can let the files be displayed so they can be recovered?

Since updating to V78.5 I can not receive nor send emails. I change the Security setting in the config editor as suggested but this did not help. My gmail settings have not changed and I'm about to delete TB and just use the web site. I did not know I had automatic upgrade on and don't know where to look for it. I'm not a geek but I'm also not a novice and I feel pretty stupid that I cant figure this out. Anyone else have the same difficulties?

because the attachment extractor addon does not work anymore in version 78 and one must detach attachment manually per each message, is there some shortcut for Detach (Detach all) attachments from the message.

Working in Thunderbird has become very annoying and complicated since version 78 (when almost all useful addons are not more supported), so at least when doing annoying and complicated manual detaching of attachments in each message, it will be great to have a shortcut for this.

More often than not, when I open my laptop (Dell Inspiron 17, Windows 10) from sleep mode, Thunderbird is minimized and off screen. I can maximize using the icon in the taskbar. But to resize and relocate to visible and useful settings, I have to right click on the taskbar icon, right click on the menu icon in upper left and click the Move option and move with the arrow keys. Once I see it, it's just a small bar with a few menu bar options showing from which I can then resize (can't resize normal view to that small a size, else would've attached screen shot). How do I stop this behavior? Want it to re-open in the last size and location it was set at before puttng the laptop into sleep mode.

I installed version of Thunderbird 78.5.0 (64-bit) and copied my Thunderbird folder to %APPDATA%

Now on the first startup of Thundebird, everything looks fine (see on-first-startup.png), all my data and open tabs are as I left them, everything seems to be working.

Now I close Thunderbird (without having done anything) via X icon and start it again. It looks like on-second-startup.png, the tabs are gone. there is no content in the panes. The menus look strange, being partly empty (menus.png). Only the Help menu is completely there, however, the items do not seem to work properly (restart with addons disabled, e.g. does nothing). The about dialog opens but looks also strange (about.png).

I have googled and tried deleting global-messages-db.sqlite in my profile but this does not change anything. The file is created anew on Thunderbird startup, but the contents remain as above.

This is 100% reproducible. If I close Thunderbird, copy the Thunderbird folder into %APPDATA% and startup, everything looks fine. On second startup the same problem as described above shows up again.

Any help would be appreciated!

I don't know if it is by design or if I misconfigured something, but when I click on an email in the message list, the focus goes directly to the email preview window.

But - how would I manually select multiple emails (e. g. for moving or deletion)? Normally in Windows I would select an item with the mouse and then press SHIFT+DOWN or SHIFT+END or SHIFT+PG_DWN etc. to select further contiguous items with the keyboard.

I've not found a way to do this in Thunderbird.

As of a couple of days ago, clicking on Get Messages frequently results in an error message saying that the connection to the pop server timed out, and clicking on Send often gets a similar message (though of course referring to the smtp server). I haven't changed any settings since implementing sfhowes' instructions in the thread mentioned above. I have zero connection problems in Firefox.

For the past few months, all of a sudden, when I turn on my VPN, Thunderbird tells me that it cannot access my emails (Comcast & Gmail) saying the connection was refused. I'm sure Mozilla will say that it's Google and Xfinity issues, but if that was the case, I wouldn't even be able to log on to the website directly. I've used a VPN for years and it is now that I am starting to have some issues. Anyone else notice that? I've looked at my settings and I don't know how else I could configure them that would stay working even after I turn off my VPN. Thanks in advance for any advice, suggestions.

Immediately after updating TB to Version 78.4 my email accounts with Earthlink and Comcast ISP's stopped functioning (incoming and outgoing). I have used TB for over 5 years and been running IMAP on all my email accounts with previous versions of TB without any issues. After trying fixes found on support forums (i.e. changing config setting security.tls.version.min from 3 to 1) I was able to get my Comcast accounts working but not my Earthlink account (which is my primary account). After 1 1/2 hours with Earthlink Tech support, I was told I needed to reinstall TB with the previous version that worked. For me this is unacceptable. Why use a specific Email client if new versions do'nt work with my ISP's or I need to tweak config files. This should all be transparent to the user. Can anyone help me with fixing my problem. I used the thunderbird addon importexporttools-ng to import an MBOX file into thunderbird. I was hoping to then copy or move the emails into gmail using thunderbird.

I have about 30,000 emails I need imported into gmail. However when I try to copy the emails into gmail using thunderbird it only copies about 8,000 of them. I couldn't possibly know which ones have been copied and which haven't.

Why aren't all the emails being copied into gmail. Is is there a setting I need to change or perhaps I need to increase a timeout setting. I thought it was only emails with an attachment that weren't being copied over but that's not the case. However I noticed larger emails are less likely to be successfully copied.

I would really appreciate some help.

When I go to Address Book I find an entry with no First: (name), no Last: and the Display: "TEST" (without the quotes). I correct the entry and all is well till the next time. Any suggestions as to how I can catch or kill the gremlin?

It appears that Thunderbird updated today (11/28/20).

When I opened Thunderbird after the update, my active profile was no longer there. The profile structure for that profile in %appdata% was totally gone, and prefs.js was in the garbage can.

thunderbird --profilemanager showed the correct profile name, but after selecting it and starting the program, I was greeted with the initial setup screen. I tried previous profiles, but none worked.

The last time I'd opened Thunderbird was about two hours prior and there was no issue at that time.

Windows Event Log shows no incidents associated with Thunderbird and Webroot shows no malicious activity on my computer.

Running Windows 10, latest patch level.

I'm not sure if I'm the only one having this problem, but given that it took me 30 minutes to figure out how to post in this forum, it's possible others are experiencing this issue too and simply gave up trying to post here.
