Firefox Cannot Access A Site

I have used Firefox to access a site for an online bank, Synchrony. I was able to establish an account at this site and access my information. Now I sometimes can use the site but more often receive an error message, "Access Denied You don't have permission to access "http://auth.synchronybank.com/account/login" on this server. Reference #18.d4eb7068.1649606742.54b71ed."

When I spoke with someone in the Tech Support group for the bank she said the problem was with Firefox and not something they could address. I am able to get to my account using Microsoft Edge, as I have to to get to another site, Shockwave.com.

I much prefer using Firefox than switching browsers for certain sites. I would appreciate if someone at Mozilla investigate these anomalies and determine the appropriate fox within the app. I don't know what changes were made in Firefox when it was updated to my current version, 99.0 64-bit.

OK, I did that. It shows: "Active The Enterprise Policies service is inactive."

Nothing happens when I click "Active" in the right column, above "Documentation." What should I do next?

You can check the connection settings.

  • Settings -> General -> Network: Connection -> Settings

If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then try to select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.

You can remove all data stored in Firefox for a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History -> Show All History" or "View -> Sidebar -> History").

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox for this domain like history and cookies and passwords and exceptions and cache, so be cautious. If you have a password or other data for that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of involved files.

If you revisit a 'forgotten' website then data for that website will be saved once again.

Thanks for the instructions but the problem is not solved. I am still unable to use Firefox to get to Shockwave.com and my access to Synchrony.com is hit-or-miss; I was able to access it yesterday but not today. This problem doesn't seem to be related to accessing a secure site -- Synchrony’s URL uses https but Shockwave doesn't. Also, I can easily access other secured sites.

when I checked with the tech support teams fro these sites, they pointed to Firefox as being the problem. I don't like the idea of switching browsers for specific sites, but right now that seems to be my only choice.

shockwave.com uses https for me as well as synchronybank.com

"You don't have permission to access" errors are usually caused by a filter protecting the server against misuse when the server thinks something is suspicious about the HTTP request.

As I said, I was able to use Firefox to get to both sites for several years but now shockwave gets me to the game landing page, but clicking "play" just leaves a splash screen with no activity. And the issue with Synchrony is intermittent.

Unless someone else has a different suggestion than those you've provided, I guess I am stuck switching to MC Edge for these sites.

Hello! Is DoH enabled? Open Settings>> Scroll at the bottom until you see Network Settings>> Click Settings on the right of it>> Scroll down on the panel that will show>> Disable the Enable DNS over HTTPS, if it is enabled

Also, if you can't seem to find any fix, you can try reporting it to Webcompat (link)

You can create a new profile as a quick test to see if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

Your instructions got me part way to a solution, for which I thank you. I created a new profile and when I used it as the default I was able to access the bank site. However, when I tried the instructions to copy my original profile's bookmarks, add-ons, and other settings, it didn't work I'm not sure what I did wrong, but I hesitated to go too far for fear of losing data.

I followed the instructions to open my original profile to locate and copy files, starting with bookmarks. Unfortunately, when I closed the old session, made the new one the default, opened a new session, and opened the new profile and pasted the file it was empty. Also, I wasn't sure which files contained my preferences and my add-ons.

Another question is whether I would have to copy the files from my old profile one-at-a-time, or if I could highlight and copy all at once,

I'd appreciate additional help so I can complete this process and get back to using Firefox for all my browsing.

When you are ready, we can start moving parts of your old data and Copy it to the new profile.


First; open your file browser to the New profile;

Type about:support<enter> in the address box.

Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.

Windows: Show/Open Folder; Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder

Linux: Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Directory. To its right press the button Open Directory.


Second, open another file browser to the Old profile. You should see it on the directory "tree" in the first file browser. Right-click on that folder and select Open In New Window.


Warning ! ! Only Copy the files you are told. We will avoid anything that might cause problems. Here is the list of files;

cookies: cookies.sqlite Do not bother. Cookies will be created when you return to the website. However, you will have to log in everywhere. And you may lose any settings and data that websites store on your computer.

extensions(add-ons, themes): it would be better to download them fresh. If you need to remember what add-ons you had, open the extensions sub-folder and look at the .xpi files


logins.json and key3.db [v58+]key4.db : These are the password files. Copy Both !

persdict.dat : custom dictionary - words you added to the dictionary

mimeTypes.rdf [v55+]handlers.json : What to do with what type of file.

places.sqlite : History and Bookmarks.

prefs.js : Your settings. Note: If you were having problems, this could be contaminated.

cert8.db [v58+]cert9.db and possibly cert_override.txt : Stores all your security certificate settings and any SSL certificates you have imported into Firefox. If removed, the cert8.db, cert9.db file will be replaced.

search.json.mozlz4 : file stores the user-installed search engines that are available in the Firefox v47+

search.sqlite file and searchplugins folder store the search engines that are available in the Firefox Search bar before Firefox v47


Copy these files from the old to the new. You may get a message that the files already exist. Choose to over-write for each file.

Thank you for the instructions, but I am still having a problem. When I started I had two sites that I could not use with my original profile -- synchronybank.com and shockwave.com. When I followed the steps to create new profile I was able to successfully access the bank from the new profile but I still couldn't get to shockwave. Now as I moved my saved logins to the new profile I stopped when I logged into a medical portal I got an error message with the new profile that the login information was incorrect. Yet I can still get to the site using my original profile. I ensured that the URL, UserID, and password were the same each time I tried to access it.

I appreciate the help you and cor-el provided but this is getting too complicated. I don't want to proceed with all my other logins. I guess I am just stuck using MS Edge for the original two sites I can't get to anymore with Firefox.

You can possibly disable the Password Manager or remove the login(s) stored for this website and enter the login credentials manually to see if that works.

As for your suggestion about manually entering login credentials, I did and still had the issues.

I'm not going any further down this rabbit hole and have resigned myself to using another browser for these limited sites.
