Password for what?

Sorry I have a dell laptop that is 7 years old that I would like to make usable for a friend. It has a password authentication program that is no longer working so I can get to the old owners user account I would like to run windows update and add security program when I launched IE found out that it is has major issues that I think are viruses or malware I can not go online due to auto launch programs, redirects and other programs that over whelm me and the screen I tried to down load Mozilla and was prompted to enter the previous owners password. I was told the person that owns this pc now bought it at a flea market so i can not get the password. i think I was trying to get mozzilla and that is when I tried to reset the password and when i followed the instructions to do the reset i clicked on the reset button and nothing seemed to happen

Sorry, with a 3rd party password authentication program and major issues with viruses or malware you might be better off formatting that device and doing a fresh Operating System installation - assuming that you have the "Windows Genuine" sticker with the Product Key on the bottom of or inside the battery compartment of that laptop and that "Key" is readable. As far as a password to install Firefox, that would be a Windows system password for the Administrator account - nothing involving Firefox or Mozilla Corp.

It could be a candidate for a Linux operating system and a new life away from the "Windows domain". Just my thoughts ... but it doesn't sound like a Firefox support issue.

Oh, BTW I have been known to be a "dumpster diver" - rescued two laptops over the years - back in the days of Win95 and Win98 when Microsoft didn't have their software and updates locked down so tight. But both had the "Windows Genuine" sticker which helped a bit even back then.
