Hello,

I've been using Thunderbird for a number of years on my Windows 10 computers (one at a time). I used to have my email hosted by Cox, but it moved to Yahoo a year or two ago. At that time, I changed my IMAP and SMTP servers from cox to yahoo.

Suddenly, the other day, I'm not longer able to send or receive email messages in Thunderbird. I can still send and receive at Yahoo.com.

Here's the setup that I've been using in Thunderbird:

Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server

Server - export.imap.mail.yahoo.com Port - 993 Requires SSL - Yes

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server

Server - smtp.mail.yahoo.com Port - 465 Requires SSL - Yes Requires authentication - Yes

When I click on my inbox, I get a dialog box that says:

"Login to server imap.mail.yahoo.com with username davidmorrison@cox.net failed."

Maybe I should set up another account, with my same name?

Appreciate any help you have!

PS: I DO donate every year or two to Thunderbird...

Thanks.

After installing upgrade to 139.0.2, POP downloads failed. Last was on 6/19/2025 at 8:19PM. I deleted both saved passwords.. Went to AOL and generated a new APP password but there was no way to upgrade to it. I sent a test message to myself [ smtp] and AOL logged me in and TB generated the saved password oauth://login.aol.com (mail-w).

However even with shutdown TB and restart, there was no request for a POP password [ such as the new AOL APP generated one. What should I do? Is this a bug? I can read and use AOL mail on my browser [EDGE]. LKint@verizon.net

Outlook email address shows up as jumbled mess in Thunderbird - Sending and receiving addresses are also swapped

I have two issues that are related to a buggy interaction between Thunderbird and Microsoft's email server.

Issue (1) When I send an email with my Outlook email address (from the Android app or from outlook.live.com, but not Thunderbird), my email address shows up as a jumbled mess in the sent folder on Thunderbird.

It appears to the effect of

IMCEAEX-_O=FIRST+20ORGANIZATION_OU=EXCHANGE+20ADMINISTRATIVE+20GROUP+XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX+29_CN=RECIPIENTS_CN=XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX@sct-XX-XX-XXXX-X-msonline-outlook-6f06c.templateTenant

(I have masked some potentially sensitive information).

In the sent folder on my Outlook Android app, my email address looks normal. It also looks fine on a browser in outlook.live.com. However, it's in the sent folder on Thunderbird that my email address is a mess.

Issue (2) When my Outlook email address is involved, the sending and receiving email addresses in the "correspondent" field are swapped in Thunderbird.

There are a couple situations where this swap happens:

  1. Sending an email with my Outlook email account (either through the Android app or outlook.live.com, but not Thunderbird). In my Outlook sent folder on Thunderbird, the "correspondent" field shows my jumbled email address and not the receiving address, such as bob@gmail.com. Likewise, In the inbox of the receiving email account (such as bob@gmail.com) on Thunderbird, the "correspondent" field shows bob@gmail.com and not my Outlook email address.
  2. Sending an email with any other account in Thunderbird to my Outlook email address. In my Outlook inbox on Thunderbird, the "correspondent" field shows my Outlook email address (this time unjumbled) and not the sending email address. However, in the sent folder of the sending email account in Thunderbird, the "correspondent" field shows up correctly (i.e., my Outlook email address).

These two issues are perplexing and probably related. Thank you for any help!

I use Spectrum (brighthouse.com) for my email server. I am using it on my current laptop. I have tried to put the same settings onto my new laptop and it won't work. I have contacted Spectrum and they are the correct settings. Now it is asking for a new password. that also didn't work. I am still using my previous password on my old laptop and that is working.

Using Nord VPN: All Gmail accounts are set up for imap on Thunderbird:

1) With VPN on, I cannot send/receive emails from/to my Gmail accounts using Thunderbird. 2) With VPN off, I can send/receive emails from/to my Gmail accounts 3) With VPN on or off and logged directly on mail.google.com, I am able to send/receive emails

And, yes, I have tried different port numbers and all server info is correct for imap on Thunderbird as indicated by #2 above. This change happened overnight and Thunderbird always worked faultlessly with Nord VPN for years. I don't think we can blame Nord VPN for this, given #3 above.

Your thoughts?

I can get to the "stored passwords" box, but the email I need to change the password for isn't listed there. I have tried to send and receive messages but nothing makes a "enter your password" box pop up. All I get when it tries to retrieve messages from Gmail is a box to give my email, (just that, not a password) and then an error message that it won't work and there is no more information. I'm using Linux. I've had both this particular email address (as well as others) and Thunderbird for years, perhaps two decades, and I can't figure out what to do now. I was going to change all my email passwords for security reasons, but there's no way I can do that until I can get Thunderbird working with POP access again. Thank you.

Hello, I tried following the steps on [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/.../moving-thunderbird-data-to-a-new-computer]. However, I currently have a flatpak installation where I land in a folder which also has executable among other files (?). I do not see the usually named profile folder and therefore cannot copy it to my new computer. Do you know how I can move in this case? Thanks

Thanx for initial reply to my help request ...

My problem with Thunderbird downloading my Yahoo.com e-mails continue.

I've changed Yahoo.com passwords in the past with no problems. Thunderbird seems to have changed & become more complicated. I can't find the app password Generator for Thunderbird, but I'm able to see my Yahoo Password & the Oauth2 security protocol etc

So how in the heck can I get Thunderbird to work properly? And download my my messages into TB as it has done for years.

I can only open my emails by right clicking it and opening in new window. Also keeps asking for password every time I go on Thunderbird. Have tried solutions on the help pages and online for both problems but not much use. Some things on account settings and security are not there to select. Is it correct that if I uninstall Thunderbird and then reinstall it the same problems will be present?

I have searched without luck.

Either every thread I can find is about a slightly different version of the question, or none of the answers have worked.

I use Outlook Express 6. I'd like to move over to Thunderbird.

I have several GB of dbx files that I would like to import/transfer/convert and be able to access in Thunderbird.

I tried to use the import tool in thunderbird, but choosing "Import from Outlook" gives me the error: "There is no email program associated to perform the requested action. Please install an email program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel." I don't see how this is relevant. Regardless, I have now selected outlook express as the default email action, but get the same error.

I have also tried the "Import from file" option, but the only options are "backed up profile", "calendars", "address books". It would seem to me that it would be common for people to move from Outlook Express to Thunderbird, so it seems bizarre to me that there isn't an option to import DBX files. I've opened DBX files in notepad before, I know they're just text, importing them should be a no-brainer. Do I have to write my own conversion program?
