accidentally uninstalled firefox (mac version) and deleted the firefox profiles folder using "secure empty trash" - how do i restore firefox when the profile folder is unrecoverable?

for those unfamiliar with the "secure empty trash" option for macs, it does not allow recovery of deleted items. i've tried reinstalling firefox, but continue to get the following message:

"A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time." - this message is generated when firefox cannot locate the profile file.
