Every other tab does not work

This has gone on for months now, but I was patient because I figured other people would also see it and solve it. Alas, no.

I am running 74.0 (64-bit) on Win7 Home Premium SP1.

Only every other tab that I create works. The URL simply remains in the address bar and nothing can persuade the browser to contact it (e.g., Enter, ctrl-R). If I repeat whatever action caused the invalid tab, I get a new tab and it works fine. There is no difference how I open the tab: click a hyperlink in Thunderbird, ctrl-click a hyperlink on a webpage, right-click+open_in_new_tab on a hyperlink on a web page.

While we're on the every-other pattern... The browser has trouble coming up in a workable condition after boot; I currently blame that on overly-aggressive A/V behavior but it does work after I close it and restart it.

Has anyone else seen behavior like this?

Does it matter what is in those tabs? Is this with all websites/pages, some, a few?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Hi Fred,

Thanks for the suggestion. I've been experimenting with it over the past two days.

At first, I thought 'safe mode' was a magic bullet, but, alas, no. If I leave the browser open for an hour, then start to use it again, I get the sometimes yes sometimes no behavior.

As to what doesn't show, well, first, let me remind you that if I open a new tab and copy the URL in, it works.

Here are some I captured:

I called for more help.

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Secure websites. Is the problem still there?

@FredMcD I haven't forgotten about your latest suggestion, just Life got a bit busy.

Hello   Jeff,

May I give you a little tip :

When you want to post a large link;   what you can do is :   put the link between brackets,   but just before adding the last bracket,   put some text,   e.g. :   "see these search results ".

You don't   have   to,   mind you,   but you might like the way it looks.

I'm talking about these brackets :   [ ...... ]

Hi McCoy,

Thanks for the tip. I am a bit new to the local markup.

I knew the links were not relevant -- as I'm 99% sure that the safe mode reboot won't be relevant, either -- but I am complying with FredMcD's requests because I hope eventually we will find out what is going on here.

-- One more data point: my other laptop is Win7 Professional and it does not happen there.
