How do I remove the secure search

I've always had my history set not to save anything and last night I switched it so that it would save my history. I switched it back to never save mode and now I have a toolbar that opens at the top that says Secure Search. I have to close this toolbar to search for something otherwise it over rides the Google search engine and uses Bing. I've always had Google set for my search engine and never had this issue until last night.

Today I've played around with everything in my preferences, but can't get rid of this. I'm using Windows 10 ( 64 bit ), and version 51.0.1 for Firefox. Any help fixing this would be greatly appreciated.

hello, this sounds like a problem possibly caused by adware on your pc.

  1. please go to the firefox menu ≡ > addons > extensions & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc).
  2. also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there.
  3. finally, run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the free version of malwarebytes & adwcleaner, which are specialised in adware and browser hijackers.

Thanks for the quick response philipp. I totally forgot to check for adware. Always nice to have a fresh set of "eyes" when working on a problem that gets you stumped after awhile. I'll be scanning for adware next.

As for my plugins I don't see anything suspicious in these.

  • Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape 15.23.20053
  • Google Update
  • NPRuntime Script Plug-in Library for Java(TM) Deploy
  • Next Generation Java Plug-in 11.121.2 for Mozilla browsers
  • Shockwave Flash 24.0 r0
  • Adobe Shockwave for Director Netscape plug-in, version 12.2.3.183
  • 5.1.50901.0

I'm not finding anything new in my programs and here is a screenshot of the adware scan I did.

thanks, please let it clean all the detections (your pc will be restarted once) and run a scan with the trial version of malwarebytes as well...

It must of been something that adwcleaner found because it vanished after that restart. Malwarebytes found 16 other potential threats so I quarantined those.

I'm going to look up what adwcleaner found and see if I can find out which one it was, and where it came from. Some of what it listed has to do with my software for downloading my insulin pump settings. I'll be very disappointed if that is where it came from.
