In making changes to several email accounts I inadvertently deleted the smtp passwords stored in Thunderbird for some Yahoo accounts including my Rogers account, which used Yahoo. I reinstalled the accounts, I can receive email on those accounts but can't send messages unless I enter the SMTP passwords when I try to send a mssage. Is there some way to reset the SMTP password for an account? The attached shows the settings for the current Rogers account.

Hello all again. Thanks for past help.

For the TB 115 I am using I have duplicate emails and I have loaded the add on from Eyal Rozenberg.

And this is going to be a super stupid question. How do I get it to run. I have it in the settings with the Flag blue on. I have looked at the default wrench settings.

But nothing happens. I see that I can add a short cut but cannot figure out how to do it.

Yes I have attempted to do online research but cannot see it. I am sure it is like 2 steps.

Sorry for my questions and thank you for your kind responses.

The reason is I have too many duplicate emails that I cannot even compact my email boxes. I have many years of emails on this tb 115.

thank you

I have some questions about Thunderbird email. If an email is suspected as being 'junk' do I just delete the email and will future emails be blocked from that sender? I don't actually open the email.

Related to this, I usually 'unsubscribe' from marketing emails, but when I click on the 'unsubscribe' many ask for my email as "verification". Why? They HAVE my email to which they've just sent their junky marketing info. I don't usually respond. So how can I unsubscribe without sending my email address, which they already have. If I just see it is marked as 'junk', and I just delete without opening it, is this as good as "unsubscribing"? Is this request for my email necessary or a phishing scam?

I'm unable to send email from my mobile device. I used the QR code method to transfer my email account information from the desktop Thunderbird, to my mobile app. I am able to send & receive email via desktop version.

I've confirmed the SMTP and password information is correct. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app. I've selected "none" regarding password for outgoing mail.

Error via mobile device: "Failed to send some messages" "Client host rejected: Access denied"

[Note: I characterized this question as an "Installation and updates" issue (even though it is not per se about initial installation or updates) because moving a profile involves installation issues.]

Recently I moved my TB profile, for the second time in the past few months. This time I paid closer attention, and noted several things of interest (that may touch on some questions that remain undiagnosed in this forum):

  1. TB took longer to start up, as it could find none of the folders cached in folderCache.json, so rebuilt the cache from the new profile location before starting. (I only learned about this from the next effect.)
  2. The "Move to" "Recent" folders list was empty; this cached list only gets rebuilt from use (that is, from moving messages manually (not via filter) to destination folders). This effect led me to folderCache.json- and also may suggest why the OP in that question could not get resolution of his problem.
  3. The newly cached folderCache.json was 528 KB, compared to 365 KB at the old location -- and that, in turn, was 170 KB larger than the 195 KB size of folderCache.json at the original location. So each time the cache is rebuilt it grows perhaps 150~200 KB (size depending on the many-times-repeated path length).

What causes the file growth? Because each time it is rebuilt, TB checks through all of the cached folder paths, apparently guided by the mailboxes listed in folderTree.json (see image below). [I think TB just checks each path to see whether it is compatible with the current profile location. If yes, the path is cached for runtime; if no, the path is repopulated from the current profile location (which takes most of the startup time).] But TB never deletes the no-longer-valid paths; it just appends to what was already in the file, so that the list of cached folder paths just grows (thereby increasing TB's startup time, every time). The best way to get rid of the old stuff is just to delete folderCache.json and let it rebuild on the next startup, to reduce the time needed for subsequent starts.

Finally, my questions: In addition to folderCache.json (different timestamp in each profile, of course), there are four files which are the same in all profiles: folderCache-x.json, x={1,2,3,4} (see screenshot). These are apparently from actions prior to the profile relocations, as they are simply copied from one profile to the next, unrelated to changes in folderCache.json. Can someone tell me:

  1. What actions cause the creation of folderCache-x.json files?
  2. Why folderCache.json merely appends new folder paths without deleting the old ones?
  3. Why folder paths are specified explicitly (fully qualified) rather than relative to the profile path?

Thanks for any pointers.

This is all for my fathers business. An old computer crashed running windows 7, and the harddrive and files are irrecoverable. (I dont need any files or address which I assume i wouldnt be able to get anyways sin the pop format.) My issue is he doesn't remember the password or if there even was one for thunderbird. the account was found, it is a bellaliant.net one and we no longer have any other services through that provider and the passwords I used to have for bell didn't work during set up. So I did the account set up with no password and autoconfig, it all "worked" or at least took me to the next step. But nothing will send or come in. Also I tried linking this Bell email to my gmail account with no success either. it used this as the mail server- mail.bellaliant.net. I don't need any history but it would be nice to receive the emails that are on the server, since its been about 20 days since i had selected the get messages button.

when I am in my Thunderbird email, recently, when I go to delete emails, I can only go a few and the system stops and the top bar states "not responding" for a minute or so, and then allows me to continue. But that also freezes after additional actions in deleting emails. This slows the operation of the system and I want to recognize what it is, eliminate it and allow the Thunderbird to continue to operate the way it has done for years.

Thunderbird implements the "n" next and "p" previous keyboard shortcuts in the message list view. Super useful shortcuts!

However they have now changed and become very user unfriendly.

Hitting 'n' moves the selected message down to the next message. If you are halfway down the list then it simply selects the next message. No auto-scroll happens.

However if you hit 'p' for some reason the whole view scrolls and aligns the selected message as the top message in the view. This is super unwelcome and jarring to the user. It should only scroll if you are already at the top and hit 'p' again.

The fact that 'n' and 'p' are inconsistent makes me think this was not intened behaviour. Can the 'p' behaviour be reverted back to 'no scroll'?

I'm a brand new Thunderbird user, having used Postbox for many happy years. I've been spending the last few days setting up a new profile, importing local mboxes, customizing settings, verifying downloads, etc. There were some hiccups but I felt most was stable (except for some stuck threading on a couple folders).

I moved on to customize a few tags and setup a filter for tagging and that's when things got crazy. As soon as I moved to another message the tag disappeared. I've been trying to isolate the issue and searched and read a ton, but I can't figure it out because SOME tags stick! Mainly the first Important tag. I deleted and added a custom one and finally it stuck, but I couldn't add or edit any more. I made a whole fresh profile to just test the tagging and only Important works. I can see no difference between any of them in the config settings.

I'm on a brand new Macbook Pro so it's up-to-date, my IMAP is icloud as it has been for over 20 years and I've always used tags in Postbox without issue, so I can't see how it's an .icloud server issue. I have only one email address, I don't sync across computers, environments, users, or installations. HOWEVER, I notice in my original profile where I imported my local mbox archives all the tags DO work there! So why do some unpredictably work on my imap and some don't? Anything else I can try? I can attach screenshots of anything if necessary. Thank you!!

The problem with standard email storage methods is that they don't scale well. Mbox, the default in Thunderbird, creates large files, and if you backup changed files, every backup requires recopying a multi-gigabyte file, because it has changed when even one message was added or deleted. Maildir, the alternative, puts each message in a separate file. But file systems have a lot of overhead and their own limits. When you have hundreds of thousands of messages, especially on a PC, that clutters the computer's file system, and between the file cluster size and directory overhead, it wastes a lot of space and slows down other operations. Two bad options. And let's not be too snarky about what that company from Redmond does in its awful mail system, with a giant proprietary mail database file that sometimes gets corrupted...

It is obviously a lot to ask to create a new mail file format that scales better. It would not be standard and could break some things anyway, though in the long run it might be a good idea. But I have an idea that might work for Thunderbird. As it stands now, it is possible to create archive files by month or year. Then new mail doesn't require those to be re-copied. WHAT IF a "virtual mailbox" could be created that, instead of consisting of one Mbox file or one maildir directory, consisted of a set of Mbox files treated by the UI as one? Quick Filter would filter them all as one, unlike with archives, and you could scroll through them all and sort them and see threads, but they'd be stored as monthly or annual (or whatever) files, the way archives are. Sending and receiving would be unchanged, using the current folders, but periodically the folder could have the oldest ones moved out and still made part of a virtual folder.

There are some modest virtual folder capabilities now, but I don't see how to do this. Does it seem like a possibility with what's there, or a modest enhancement, or is that the kind of thing that would be a huge effort?

My Thunderbird client stop receiving email from the ATT account sometime late December. I don't check email every using Thunderbird client. I've since have created a new secure mail key using ATT site. This solved problem in prior years. I also change the server names from pop.att.yahoo.com to inbound.att.net and from smtp.att.yahoo.com to outbound.att.net and I still can't download email. I don't see any message in the bottom status bar/area.

Just wondering if there was a way to change the behavior of Thunderbird. Currently, if I add a subfolder to an IMAP mail account, that folder will show up in the Unified Inbox. Yes, I know how to remove it from there but I'm getting tired of doing that each time I add a folder as I need to do it to multiple devices.

Thanks.

I have two problems with labels after changing computer. The first is that by entering the names of the labels, they are put in alphabetical order and not in the previous one. After years of use, it’s quite annoying...

The second is that in the grouping of messages by labels, they are doubled. Instead in the Inbox folder no. And this is more serious.

MacBook Pro M4 Pro, macOS 15.2 Thunderbird 128.6.0esr (64 bit)
