Firefox doesn't save any preferences (options) upon closing.

Whenever I close and re-open firefox, any changes made to options are reset. This happens both in ESR 17.0.8 AND in the latest version of FF 23.0.1.

Things I have tried: Troubleshootnig information > reset firefox Uninstall / Re-install Create new profile delete all profiles, uninstall re-install check permissions on profile folders

I have been bumbling around with this issue for several hours and I noticed in the profile folder that extensions.log has an error regarding startup file checks that references preferences and am wondering if it is related. I tried a google search and couldn't find anything specific to my issue:

When I deleted the file, opened and closed firefox, I also got these two errors:

Forgot to mention, the first thing I tried was the troubleshooting information > reset firefox option. Didn't work.
