The configured key ID ... cannot be found after upgrade to 1:153.5.1esr

Dr. Peter Zimmerer

After upgrade to thunderbird 153.5.1esr from 140.17.0esr on a debian 13 (trixie) system I can no longer digitally sign my message with my external OpenPGP key located on a smartcard: I get the error message "Unable to send the message, because there is a problem with your personal key. The configured key ID ‘...’ cannot be found on your keyring." If I try to import the public key via the OpenPGP Key Manager I will get the alert "Importing the keys failed. TypeError: RNPLib.prepare_ffi is not a function". Any idea how to fix this?

This is a Debian issue. You need to check with them. https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1152139

I have the same exact problem. My Open PGP key manager is now empty and it is impossible to import a key pair from outside, impossible to encrypt or decrypt or sign a message.

My believe was that storing my keys inside Thunderbird with the key manager was a safe practice. Apparently not. Updates are some time source of big troubles. How can an update be proposed without checking if it works fine ?

Debian GNU/Linux 13 (trixie) (13.7)

This is a packaging issue with Debian, and only they can fix it. If you can't wait for a fix from Debian, the vanilla Thunderbird version from https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/ will work.

You should complain to Debian.
