when there is an update, why does firefox just become unusable instead of giving a message saying there is an update availabe?
give a warning rather than making none of my tabs load. a simple message would do.

If you're not on a managed enterprise install, this should not be happening. See previous support.mozilla.org/questions/1589626 or support.mozilla.org/questions/1589584 for comparison — if what you're experiencing is the "Restart to keep using Firefox" about:restartrequired tab/process dead end being shown on its own:
