Firefox becomes slow after running for a while

Modern Hairstyles

Hi, I’ve noticed that Firefox sometimes becomes noticeably slower after I’ve had it open for several hours, especially with multiple tabs.

Closing a few tabs helps temporarily, but I’d like to understand what is actually causing the slowdown rather than simply restarting the browser.

What would be the best way to identify whether the issue is related to an extension, memory usage, a particular tab, or Firefox itself?

I’m using the latest Firefox version. Any troubleshooting steps or tools you recommend would be appreciated.

Hi,

If Firefox gets slower only after running for several hours, especially with many tabs open, I’d first try to identify whether a particular tab, extension, or memory usage is responsible.

A few useful checks:

Open about:processes in Firefox and look for tabs, extensions, or processes using unusually high CPU or memory.

Also check about:performance to see whether a particular tab or extension is consuming excessive resources.

Try Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode for a while. This temporarily disables extensions and some customizations. If the slowdown does not occur there, an extension or customization is a likely factor.

If the problem continues, check Windows Task Manager while Firefox is slow. Compare Firefox's CPU and memory usage with its usage shortly after starting.

If closing a particular tab consistently improves performance, that site may be using significant resources or may have a page-specific issue.

You can also try disabling extensions one at a time rather than disabling everything permanently. That makes it easier to identify the specific extension causing the problem.

If you can reproduce the slowdown, it would also be useful to note the Firefox version, Windows version, number of open tabs, and whether about:processes shows any unusually high resource usage. That information should make it much easier to narrow down the cause.
