whenever i open a new tab, firefox will not go to the tab, but wants to setup sync.

Firefox stopped working properly this morning. whenever i try and open a new tab firefox tries to get me to setup sync instead of going to the new website. I turned off sync. I do not want to sync with anything at this time. How can i get firefox to work again?
