Can I access the bookmarks without opening Firefox?
After a problem with his Internet connection, a friend is now unable to open Firefox. At first the message was that ‘… this tag has crashed.’ Now the message is that it cannot find something with a .dll at the end. I suggested to simply uninstall and then reinstall Firefox, which would also ensure that he has the latest version. However, he has no backup of his bookmarks.
I was, therefore, wondering whether it is possible to access the bookmarks somewhere else on the computer, in order to back them up before the uninstall/reinstall procedure.
Many thanks.

Normally, it is safe to rename the Firefox program folder -- typically
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
-- to something like
C:\Program Files\OldFirefox
and then run the installer. It should detect the existing settings and resume using them automatically.
However, for the sake of safety, you could first back up the active profile folder, or at least these files:
- places.sqlite => database file that stores bookmarks and history
- favicons.sqlite => companion file for site icons
- logins.json + key4.db => for saved logins
- sessionstore.jsonlz4 => open tabs from the last session
- bookmarkbackups and sessionstore-backups folders in case the current files turn out to be corrupted
More generally: Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.
That's brilliant. Thanks ever so much. I'll try this and will mark it as solved if it does so.
