DUO 2-factor authentication

I am hoping that someone can help me with this issue. I am not very tech savvy and I am trying to use Thunderbird to access my university email that employs two factor authentication using the DUO app. I found some configuration suggestions online and things have worked for me to receive emails but they will not send. Does anyone have any advice concerning this issue? Thanks.

Have you tried with the authentication set to OAuth2, for incoming and outgoing? That's standard for MS accounts (hotmail, outlook.com, O365 etc.).

For anyone else who comes across trying to access their email using DUO authentication, following sfhowes advice and switching to Oauth2 as the authentication method worked for me.
