Every time I open Firefox it tells me that I need to update flashplayer, I download the update, it automatically tries to open as a ms word file

The file should end with .dmg, which normally is a system extension not associated with Microsoft Word. Is Firefox changing the name??

Since the same plugin is used by both Safari and Firefox, have you tried downloading with Safari?
