When I click on open new tab it does not open. It does nothing. The only time a new tab opens is when I open on of my bookmarks.

That can a problem with the Ask.com toolbar (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions)

I restarted firefox in safe mode and tested opening a bookmark in a new tab (by right clicking on the bookmark). As this worked as epxected I restarted firefox in normal mode. Since than everything is working fine for me.
