my school's gmail folks just sent a note which I think means Thunderbird will no longer work with my main email account.
The note said "You are receiving this message because according to our records, you have recently logged into your . . . Google account using an outdated protocol (IMAP). This is usually through an external application such as Apple Mail or Outlook. We will be applying some security updates on October 28th, including disabling access to email via IMAP. Apple Mail and Microsoft Outlook use IMAP so these will no longer work after IMAP is disabled. You should start using the web interface on your computer and the GMail App on your iPhone immediately to make sure that you don't miss any emails.
So does this mean I won't be able to use Thunderbird any more?

If you're using the school's network, they can block any ports or protocols they want. If this is a school account that's managed by them, it would be very easy to just shut off IMAP access in Gmail's settings. Without knowing the gory details, I'm sure they can make it difficult or impossible to manage school-owned Gmail accounts with IMAP clients like Thunderbird.
If you have your own personal Gmail account, and other provider's accounts (Yahoo, Outlook, AOL, etc.) I don't think they can affect those.
So, if my assumptions are correct, my guess is that you won't be able to access your school account with Thunderbird, but you will still be able to access any private, personal email accounts you may have.
It's not right for them to call IMAP "outdated". It's fairly modern, secure, stable, and reliable. I can't imagine why they would want to ban it, unless they're trying to make it easier to monitor the contents of your email.
