Thunderbird backups no longer work properly
Hi. I have always taken a daily copy of my .thunderbird directory and am convinced I've been able to copy this back a day or two later, if I've mistakenly deleted something. Now it seems, whether I back up the .thunderbird directory or simply the profile file, when it's copied back, Thunderbird reverts to the current contents, as if the data is being stored elsewhere ! What am I doing wrong please? TIA.

That is correct. That is how IMAP works. If you delete and restore messages often, then perhaps you should be using a local folder as the target for deleted messages. You can change what happens when you delete messages via Account Settings > Server Settings. Create a local folder and select it as the target where deleted messages are moved. If you want different behaviour, you should switch back to POP.

You can verify where exactly Tbird is storing its data on your system via the Help menu > More Troubleshooting Information. Under the Application Basics heading, in the Profile Folder row, click the Open Folder button. It will take you to the profile folder where Tbird currently stores its data.
Thanks for the reply. The profile folder is po9kvkpo.default. If I save it, then delete an existing email and then replace the profile folder with the copy, intialy the email appears but within seconds it disappears, as if the folder is being updated from elsewhere.
I'm fairly certain, that in the past, this procedure has worked just fine. Strange !
Hi. It's suddenly dawned on me that this is an imap account and so presumably although I've restored the local profile file, the PC is simply re-aligning itself with the imap server. Is this correct and is there any better backup strategy? Thanks.

Thanks for the confirmation.
