I sometimes get the following error: "Connection to server pop.att.yahoo.com was reset." Thunderbird seems to connect to the server, but it hangs for a short time and doesn't download messages. Clicking "get messages" doesn't resolve the problem. If I try again a few hours later, everything is fine. There is no problem sending messages at any point.

I don't think the problem is on the server end, because I can get to the messages from my iPhone, even while my PC is showing this error.

This has been going on for at least a couple of months. I never made any changes to settings. Any suggestions?

Have you updated your account to use OAuth or a secure mail key?

The reply from sfhowes seemed promising, so I updated to a secure mail key. However, that did not solve the problem, because I just got the error again. Are there any other possibilities?

That was worth a try, but unfortunately, it didn't solve the problem. I just made the change, and got a similar error. This time it read, "Connection to server inbound.att.net was reset."

What else could it be? And why does it happen sometimes, but not all the time?

If the connection is sporadic, it usually points to issues at the server end. You could run Windows in safe mode just to test there's no other program affecting TB's operation. Also, check in Tools/Options/Security/Passwords/Saved Passwords that inbound.att.net is using the correct mail key.
