How to make character encoding default to unicode-8
I normally use UTF-8 encoding but almost every time I sign on to email odd characters appear in my emails. When I check the encoding box I find it set to Western... I then change to back to Unicode and the odd characters disappear. When I sign on the next time, the same situation occurs. Why does Firefox keep changing the encoding? I do not have this problem with Internet explorer.

What does "Tools > Page Info > General" show as the encoding detected and send by the server?
If the server send a file with a specific encoding then that prevails over other specifying this otherwise (meta tag or sniffing the file).
Thanks for your reply. My home page has two tabs… The first is Google – the Page Info box encoding shows UTF-8 The second is Juno webmail – the page Info box encoding shows windows-1252
That is likely caused by what content type the Juno server sends via the HTTP response headers. What the server sends always prevails. You can check that in the Network log in the Web Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer).
Use Ctrl+F5 or Ctrl+Shift+R to reload the page and bypass the cache to generate a fresh log. You can click a line inspect the HTTP request and response headers.
Thanks again. Your answer is way to complicated for me but I believe it boils down to the following:
1) The tab that always starts with Western encoding is caused by the info sent by my email service.
2) The above can't be overridden by Firefox.
Do I have that right?
You will have to change the encoding yourself manually if the server sends the wrong encoding.
- Firefox > Web Developer > Character Encoding
- View > Character Encoding
You can tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu Bar.
You have convinced me that Firefox cannot solve my problem. For now I will continue to change the character encoding each time I open Firefox BUT FIREFOX SHOULD PROVIDE A WAY TO FORCE YOUR CHOSEN ENCODING METHOD as many others must have this same inconvenience issue.
Thanks for your responses to my problem.
