I no longer use charter and want to get rid of the charter email accounts in my T-bird mail - the charter email is grayed out and says default - how do I get rid of an email account I no longer use? I deleted it in this file:

C:\Users\jantallent\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\fc9zhx97.default\ImapMail\imap.charter.net

hoping it would take the charter address out of my T-bird desktop list but it is still there.

I just read a T-bird doc that says even after the email address has been successfully deleted it will still be IN the list of email addresses in the menu for them

Where did you read that? It's quite wrong, IMHO. Indeed, users have been known to "delete" an account and then express alarm that it and all its messages and folders have disappeared. I am not at all sure why they are surprised at this. What else would one expect to happen?

What I would say is that removing an account from Thunderbird does not delete the underlying message store, so the contents of a removed or deleted account can often be retrieved.

When you deleted C:\Users\jantallent\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\fc9zhx97.default\ImapMail\imap.charter.net you simply deleted the message store. This doesn't remove the account. Indeed, in an IMAP-connected account, what you just removed will probably be restored when Thunderbird next synchronizes with the server.

How do you propose to save, then presumably, restore these messages? I think you really need to understand more about the profile before you do irreparable damage.

Select the account, choose "View Settings…" in the right-hand pane.

Or right-click the account, choose "Settings" in the pop-up menu.

Now you will see the Account Settings pane. You can select any account, and in Account Actions at the bottom, set it as default or delete it, as appropriate.

Thank you - I have tried that several times - I just read a T-bird doc that says even after the email address has been successfully deleted it will still be IN the list of email addresses in the menu for them.

I am going to try to save all of the most important emails from my other 5 profiles I use in T-bird and uninstall and then install the newest updated version. I just do not want the 2 former charter addresses I used to be in my menu for my desktop email.

thank you!
