Tried all the fixes, 25.0.1 is still using 100% of CPU a lot of the time.

Switched off all plug ins, add-ons, reinstalled Firefox with latest version having removed the previous install of the latest version, disabled everything again. CPU still intermittently maxing out enough to prevent typing, except for some strange reason, on this page. Window XP Pro, AMD Sempron.

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

Acceleration has been switched off during this process of attempting to fix the problem. However, I will try the boot in safe mode.
