In "Classic Search" I want to remove certain terms (they are redundant) but I am not able to do so.

I added these terms by: Right-click on folder, select "Search Messages..." select the drop-drop down from the first displayed term then select "Customize" and then in the "New message header:" window adding the terms.

In the first image below I want to remove the highlighted terms. When I get to the "New message header:" and highlight a term and then select "Remove", the term is NOT removed.

How can I edit the search terms?

I am comfortable at the command line and editing config files.

Any help would be appreciated.

Configuration: Thunderbird 68.7.0 (64-bit) Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.6

Chosen solution

The problem is that you added custom headers for items that are already in the default setup. The custom headers are stored in the preference mailnews.customHeaders, so if you right-click, Reset, they should be cleared. Preferences/Advanced/General/Config. editor.

Thank you sfhowes. This is just what I needed.

I was trying to create a single search term "From, To, Cc or Bcc" for searching remote mail stores (IMAP). I notice when searching "Local Folders" there is a single search term "From, To, Cc or Bcc" as well as other terms that are NOT available when searching remote mail stores.

Is it possible to create a single search term "From, To, Cc or Bcc" for searching remote mail stores?

Thanks again.

In the attached picture you can see that From and From, To, Cc or Bcc are available search filters for my Hotmail IMAP account. This is with TB 68.7/W10. I don't know why it would be any different on OS X. Maybe you have a broken layout? See if the options are different in safe mode (hold Option when you launch TB), or in a new profile (Help/Troubleshooting, about:profiles, Create new profile).

It's not got anything to do with operating systems, a "broken layout", nor is there any need to build a new profile. Your image gave me the clue that was staring me in the face all this time...

Though we're both searching an IMAP account, there's a difference between our searches. I have "Run search on server" checked, and you have this unchecked.

If I uncheck "Run search on server" I then see the additional search filters including "From, To, Cc or Bcc". ( Doh! Is there an emoticon for slapping your forehead with your own hand?)

I probably would not have stumbled on that without the image you provided - so thanks again!

For the sake of other users, I've attached pictures of the filters available with and without 'Run search on server' checked. Some items are my custom headers and ones provided with FiltaQuilla. Due to server searches being more resource-intensive, there are fewer options.

Many thanks for clearing this up. (I posted a separate question today, but it appears I have the same problem).

I'm not sure why Thunderbird now prevents a user from running a From+To+Cc+Bcc search if the search is to run on the server, and I find that a frustrating change to have been implemented.
