IMAP: UNchecked folders (=don't sync) are still displayed - why?

Dear all,

i've set up an IMAP account and dozens of my folders became immediately visible in Thunderbird.

As i need only some of them, i've UNchecked those i don't want to be neither shown nor synchronized - using "Synchronization & Storage" -> "Advanced". I expected unchecked folders to dissappear from Thunderbird if not immediately, so at least after restart.

Nope - they're still there. Waited for several hours (for all possible syncs between TB and server to be completed) - same result.

Am i doing smth wrong?

Thank you!

Maybe there's a way to somehow manually "refresh" the list of folders, so that only those needed are left?

do you have the show only subscribed folder set in Server settings > advanced?

I think that might be what you are missing

Hi Matt,

i'd be happy if that would have been that easy. :-( Sure, i have this option ON. Moreover, i set it OFF and ON again (just in case), but no result so far...

Frankly saying i don't understand why this probem still exists. With 2 different mail providers by the way..

open your profile folder (help menu > troubleshooting information and use the open button beside profile folder.

Close Thunderbird rename the file foldertree.json

Restart Thunderbird. We will see if that does anything.

Did you right-click the account in the Folder Pane, Subscribe, and uncheck (unsubscribe to) the folders?

Hi Sfhowes, i did that and it finally worked with GMail - its All Emails folder (GMail's default) has finally disappeared. Bingo! However, another email provider's behaviour is very strange: when i UNcheck all the folders and click OK and then return to check back those i need - i see that ALL folders are checked by themselves, as if i didn't uncheck them before...

Hi Matt, i did all that and the new .json was automatically created with the same folder structure as before. Funny thing is that in "Synchronization & Storage" -> "Advanced" i have the possibility to check only those folders i need (and exactly they are currently checked), however in the Folder pane i can't uncheck folders i don't need (as i've described to Sfhowes above).

GMail is done however, but with the 2nd provider (where i have dozens of folders!) the solution is still badly needed...

Thank you for your time and support guys!

To remove the leftover All Mail folder, see the All Mail section here. Also, see the section that mentions setting the IMAP server directory to [Gmail] to clean up the folder structure.

Who is the provider for the account with the folders that can't be unsubscribed? Are the folder names grey and in italics? You might be able find some setting that needs to be adjusted:

Thank you! That's a good article, really! Though my problem with All Mail is solved, this article definitely goes to bookmarks.

Not sure which problem exactly you've meant by "clean up the folder structure", but what really annoys me in GMail is that only Inbox is the subfolder of my account name. The rest of the GMail folders i'm subscribed to (Sent, Trash, Spam, etc.) are subfolders of the standalone [Google Mail] folder (in grey italic). Take it this way: [Google Mail] and Lelantos_GMail are both parent folders; Inbox is child folder of Lelantos_GMail and all other folders are children of [Google Mail]. This sucks. I want all folders to be children of Lelantos_GMail and [Google Mail] to dissappear forever. Is that possible?

Another useful link i'd like to thank you for! The provider is Mail.Ru. I'm not using it myself, but my Mom does, so i'm kinda solving her problems. :-) Folders are not in grey, but in black and not italic - just regular font. I guess makes sense to drop their support an email rather than torturing Thunderbird community - probably problem is on their side..

The attached picture shows the folder pane for a gmail account, with [Gmail] set as the IMAP server directory. Whatever choice you make, gmail's particular style of IMAP may still not allow a satisfactory display of the folders, as is explained in the kb article.
