1st day using new thunderbird on lubuntu 18.04, all of a sudden big letters and icons appeared superimposed over the pane with list of messages. Please fix.

more options

Just installed lubuntu 18.04 last night, with thunderbird 52.8.0. Some messages have wierd stuff in their From, Subject, or possibly other fields, that apparently causes graphics to be displayed in the field and superimposed over other messages in the pane that lists messages.

This may be a thunderbird bug. At first it seemed like an elementary failure to sanitize data from untrusted sources., but it may be some kind of malware that arrived as part of thunderbird or lubuntu, since the problem affects messages that I didn't notice a problem with prior to updating the OS and probably thunderbird. It affects a handful of messages out of thousands, but the large size of the graphics makes it difficult to ignore.

Examples excerpted from view source of messages with the problem.

(1) Subject: =?utf-8?q?=E2=9D=93=E2=9D=93The_return_of_=E2=80=A6_!_=7C_Le_retour_du_?=

=?utf-8?q?=2E=2E=2E_!_=E2=9D=93=E2=9D=93?=

displays some big red question marks

(2) From: =?UTF-8?B?QlJFQUtJTkcg8J+aqCAzMTQgQWN0aW9u?= <info@314action.org>

displays a red light as from the top of an old police car

Notes on support website:

General comment: I don't want to ask a question, I want thunderbird to fix its bugs, all of them. Forget glitzy new features. This is why I've been impervious to requests for donations. I would think (or hope) that as a non-commercial product, thunderbird wouldn't feel the need for competition on features like the commercial browsers do.

Btw add of image hung, either png or jpg. Firefox 60.0.1.

Thanks. I didn't find a thread on this forum about this issue, but it was easy to find on ubuntu forums. For example, https://askubuntu.com/questions/1030609/18-04-fresh-install-thunderbird-inbox-invaded-by-large-icons ; its suggested cure "sudo apt-get install fonts-symbola" worked for me. I'm still in the dark as to how thunderbird chooses the font to use, and why there is any need to put graphics into the headers in the first place, but thanks for your help.

It is a bug with a font used in Linux. There are some other threads here that says which font and how to disable it. I am sure you can search for it yourself.

This worked for me. Installed the font and re-launched ThunderBird.
