I still use Windows XP sp3 as a vital piece of software that I use does not work on later versions and has not been converted. This evening I found that both Thunderbird and firefox fail to start. I have tried a new user - no different. They both appear in processes but no window opens. I have tried safe mode - no different I have tried an old restore point - no different. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling - no different. Where next?

The problem has been solved. It proved to be a problem with the settings in AVG Internet Security after a recent update. Many thanks for the advice and help, not all of which proved to be relevant, I'm afraid.

I suggest reinstalling Firefox v52 32bit

Install Older Version Of Firefox {web link} Be sure to read everything here.

If you still want to downgrade, look under; I still want to downgrade. Click the Directory of other versions and languages link. Look for the directory of the version that you want. But, remember that old versions may have security issues.

You should also check out Firefox; Extended Support Release {web link} ESR Notes System Requirements

Some problems occur when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;

  • Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
  • Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see

Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet. {web link}

It helped, thank you, but now Thunderbird still will not load. Switching off the AVG firewall and on again allowed Firefox to start, but at 1am I cannot test further tonight!

Further testing shows that despite Firefox and Thunderbird being allowed in the AVG firewall the only way I can get either to go beyond loading the process is to switch AVG off. I am very unhappy at the idea of loading an old version of Firefox, which would do nothing for the Thunderbird problem Finally I have not got Malwarebytes on that machine

Several more hours of trying to cure this problem have been wasted and I am concerned that my attempts may have opened up my machine to a virus or hackers

Firefox Extended Release Version is old but it is updated for security. Corporations use it that are still migrating or need it for the older Extensions and plugins as well as tons of XP users. https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/

Ask about Thunderbird here; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/products/thunderbird

Ok , you have been given solutions. You need to try them out.
