I've seen many suggest AVAST issued or High Contrast is turned on.I fit neither of those. Don't make me use Chrome!! Thankx Cathy

Hi Cathy, I'm sorry to hear about your accident and wish you a speedy recovery.

Usually ESET will insert its signing certificate into Firefox's certificate store automatically at some point, either at Windows startup or if you reinstall ESET. Alternately, you can import that certificate manually. There are various past threads about this.

But... assuming you still have the Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop -- the folder created by the Refresh feature -- you could cheat a bit and copy your old cert8.db file into your newly created profile folder, replacing the one that doesn't contain the ESET certificate. If you want to try that:

Open Your Post-Refresh Profile folder in Windows Explorer

Open the Troubleshooting Information page using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • Help menu > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table, click the "Show Folder" button. Firefox will launch your brand new profile folder in Windows Explorer.

Leaving that folder open, switch back to Firefox, and Exit using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
  • (menu bar) File > Exit

When Firefox closes, the profile folder should be front and center. Scroll down to the cert8.db file, right-click it and delete it.

Copy Old File in Place of New

Leaving that window open, open or switch over to your Old Firefox Data folder.

If you have used the Refresh feature more than once, there may be multiple folders here. If there's more than one, you'll want to work with the one that was updated most recently.

Drill down into your old profile folder and find the cert8.db file, and right-click > Copy it.

Switch to the current profile folder in other window and Paste (either right-click > Paste or Ctrl+v).

Then start up Firefox and it should trust ESET once again. Success?

I've seen this exact problem posted on your site a few times with different solutions. None of those solutions help me. the problem is shown in the screenshot I attached to my question. The only web page that has formatting in FF is the home/start page. I've done a "refresh/reset" Firefox, I am at version 43.01, installed yesterday. I have no addons now because of the reset. I've been using FF forever and am now on windows 10 pro the past 2-3 months and all has been well, I don't know what caused this, unless the refresh did it. Yesterday I did refresh because I had lost my Bookmarks toolbar and FF was displaying only partial toolbars if I opened more than one window. That has been corrected - I have my bookmarks bar now. But when I think about it, after the refresh is when my pages stopped formatting. I just upgraded to version 44 firefox and my pages are fine now. I hope this helps others. Thanks. Cathy

Never mind. I tried 3-4 websites, one of them a mozilla forum and they looked fine. Then I went to the Add-ons page and it's not formatted. So scratch that previous reply. Version 44 DID NOT solve the problem. I'm sending more screen prints.

So the pages that display properly are apparently in cache. Like the FF start page, the google search page, etc. I am going to try a complete uninstall of FF, move my profile, reinstall,, and see if that helps. I suspect it won't. I'm sure it's a conflict with something else. But Chrome works fine - that's what I'm using so I can use the web. Because not only do pages have no formatting, when you click on a link it doesn't do anything.

Hi Cathy, some of the content in those pages appears to be blocked. The major sites often use a content distribution network (CDN), and we occasionally see users where that content is blocked.

Have you seen any "untrusted connection" or "secure connection" error messages? If you created an "exception" for the top level server address, this does not unblock the CDN. Since you should never need an exception for a well-run site, we would want to get to the bottom of that issue first.

If you get untrusted connection errors for most secure sites, the problem usually is one of the following:

(1) Error in your system's date, time, or time zone, which throws off certificate validity checks. Sometimes allowing computers to use an internet-based time source can introduce this problem.

(2) Firefox not being set up to work with your security software that intercepts and filters secure connections. Products with this feature include Avast, BitDefender, ESET, and Kaspersky; AVG has a Search Shield feature which can cause this error on search sites.

(3) On Windows 10, Firefox not being set up to work with the parental control software Microsoft Family Safety. (To test by turning it off, see: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wi.../turn-off-microsoft-family-settings)

(4) Malware on your system intercepting secure connections.

So... which is it?

If you have any of those specific security products, that would be the first thing to check. We might be able to assist with specific next steps based on what you have if you tell us.


To gather further information, you could inspect a sample certificate to see whether that points to the culprit. If you want to try that now, here's how I suggest starting:

Load my test page at: https://jeffersonscher.com/res/jstest.php

You likely will get an error page. Expand the "I understand the risks" section and look for an Add Exception button.

Note: You don't need to complete the process of adding an exception -- I suggest not adding one until we know this isn't a malware issue -- but you can use the dialog to view the information that makes Firefox suspicious.

Click Add Exception, and the certificate exception dialog should open.

Click the View button. If View is not enabled, try the Get Certificate button first.

This should pop up the Certificate Viewer. Look at the "Issued by" section, and on the Details tab, the Certificate Hierarchy. What do you see there? I have attached a screen shot for comparison.

jscher2000, Thanks for all of your input, and I did your test and sure enough got the Insecure connection. But I had not gotten that before you sent your sample page. Now since then I've gotten that msg on quite a few pages. Why would it start showing that error just after using your sample page? I am NOT using family safety features in Windows 10. I am using ESET. Your message was full of info, but I'm afraid I'm not sure what action I need to take to correct the problem. Since I'm not using family safety, do you think there is a setting in ESET that could be causing the unformatted pages - and the recent "Insecure connection" pages?

I'm sending some new examples with this msg. Partially formatted pages, mages that are disorganized, pages with missing parts...

You can check the log in the Web Console for error messages and the Network Monitor (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer) to see if content fails to load or is possibly blocked.

Use Ctrl+F5 or Ctrl+Shift+R to reload the page and bypass the cache to generate a fresh log.

Hi Cathy, when you tested my site, what was listed under "Issued by"? This would help identify whether ESET is creating the problem.

Note: In Firefox 44, the relevant button on the connection error page is "Advanced" instead of "I understand the risks".

On the Schwab site, the style sheets load from a different server (see attached screen shot -- this is the Network Monitor cor-el mentioned). If you try to load it directly, what happens?

cor-el, output from console link. Network link same issue w/format. I refreshed and looked for logs, and didn't see anything on that page. I'm a geek, and have quite a bit of IT knowledge but have never delved into FF technical details. I have to go to work, maybe we can pick up on this later today. Thanks to both of you guys for your help.

You have to proceed to the next steps: click the Add Exception button, then click the View (View Certificate) button to call up the certificate viewer. You can cancel out of the exception process after checking the issuer information.

Jscher, Sorry it's taken so long for me to respond. I was in a car accident Wednesday. I'm very lucky - no broken bones or serious injuries. But I am bruised in too many places to count. My right foot up to my right hip is really beat up and I can barely walk. My chest and upper lip are bruised from the airbag. So basically I'm just very sore and very stiff. I had a Ford Escape (the baby SUV) and he has the Lincoln Navigator (the Granddaddy SUV) and we had a near head on collision.

ESET was indeed the culprit. I had an issue that came up once before due to ESET, but it was an easy fix. Don't even remember what it was, that was about 2 years ago. I can't get screen prints to load. Tried 3 times - I even converted to .png format before trying upload. It just spins that wheel forever.

The Issued to "Common Name is ESET SSL Filter CA"

I'm looking at ESET now and trying to find a workaround on their support web site. If you know ESET and have an idea where I should go to get past this, please let me know. Otherwise, I might have to contact ESET support.

But the thing that bugs me about this is "All has been running fine with this configuration since August 2015 It was after I did the Reset that this problem began.

FYI I'm running ESET Nod32 version 9 - just the antivirus, no Smart Security software.

Add another solution to your total! That did the trick. Thanks so very, very much. I'm typing this response on Firefox. You're terrific, very patient, and a Firefox wizard. I can't thank you enough.

And thank you for the wishes for a speedy recovery. I'm feeling a little better each day. Doctors say it will take a few weeks and I'm fine with that. Better than being in the hospital.
