Chosen solution

Yes, the old bar changed your default when you selected a different search engine, and you would select it before you submitted your search.

The new bar is designed to let you more easily use a non-default site for a one-time search by filling in your query and clicking its icon to submit to that site, without having to change your default.

The browser.search.showOneOffbuttons pref is no longer supported in Firefox 43+.

You can find this feature in the CTR Options/Preferences.

  • CTR Options > General UI (1) -> Old search (experimental)

If you can mostly live with the "new" search bar (launched in Firefox 34) but find some aspects annoying, do you want to mention what they are in case there's a quick fix?

I use to be able to pick a search engine from a drop down menu. Now i have to right click on it and set it as my default to use it. The old way automatically set it as default I think.

Some of us would actually prefer the old search bar (and that's why restoring it should be enabled again on Firefox, better if that restoring is enabled in the search settings) to the new one for two reasons: 1: we sometimes need autocompletion when writing in an specific search engine, and 2: changing quickly the default search engine for several consecutive searches in a certain engine.

Hi windom, you're right, if you want search suggestions from a different search engine, you need to right-click it and Set as Default Search Engine before you've typed your query (or at least before you get too far into it).

The only way to get the old bar back at this point is to use an add-on. Currently the Classic Theme Restorer extension is the one I've read about. It wouldn't surprise me if others pop up. If you haven't used CTR before, it's like a time machine and has a zillion options.
