I have a series of windows of firefox show up when I put the cursor on the icon in the task bar. Periodically I do something that shifts the order of these windows, but I can't figure out what it is I do. I want to put them back in the original order. can you help? thanks.

I see the order changes according to what you were looking at last when you close firefox and reopen. That's what makes them move around. So how can I manually move them within the task bar or stop them from moving around in the task bar. Trying to keep organization. thanks

In my experience with Windows (not recent, admittedly), the order of icons in the taskbar depends on in what order you opened the windows. I think you would have to develop the habit of opening things in the same order all the time?

I see they move when you reopen firefox. Is there any way to turn this off. Also I think I accidentally changed something in options on firefox. When I open an email and try to go to a link from the email, nothing happens.

Sorry, I cannot help there. I am not familiar with the current versions of Windows or Firefox. I suppose you have several Firefox windows with different tabs in them. I have never done that, since I have never seen any reason to have more than one main window open.

In my experience the order can swap when going from two monitors to single monitor (e.g. unplugging a laptop from a big monitor).

What I haven't worked out is why it always switches to the wrong order, but never the other way around.

In case it matters: in my set up the laptop screen is on the right and the big monitor is on the left. I suspect this is the most common arrangement for right-handed people with limited desk space: you want the big monitor to line up with the keyboard and the small laptop screen to line up with the extra space behind the mouse.

Here's the simplest workaround I can find:

  1. Close all the windows except the one you want to appear first in the task bar.
  2. Then from the Firefox menu choose History.
  3. Under "Restore Closed Windows" click the window you want to appear next in the task bar.
  4. Repeat until you have all the windows you want in the correct order.
