I cannot use the Google website now because a security pop up keeps coming up. If I use the Dutch google.nl it works fine, but I cannot set this website as my main search engine because it doesn't have that option in the settings. It just says Google (which is google.com) amongst other options like Bing. I'm on a Mac. Adding the site as an exception doesn't work. I hope I can say it correctly in English because the notification is in Dutch. It says the Google uses the wrong certificate which is for wordpress:

google.com gebruikt een ongeldig beveiligingscertificaat. Het certificaat is alleen geldig voor de volgende namen: *.wordpress.com, wordpress.com (Foutcode: ssl_error_bad_cert_domain)

If I use a different browser it works fine but I don't want to use a different one.

I hope someone can help me, thank you!

uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is only valid for the following names: * .wordpress.com ,

This is the English translation of that error message.

It's now happening with youtube and other sites too, I haven't been able to find info on this particular issue on the internet, and no replies here either, I'm sure it's out there but I am chronically ill and do not have the energy to go look for this. Hope someone can help me...

You can check the connection settings.

If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then try to select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.

See "Firefox connection settings":

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Before I check everything you write there (for which I thank you :)) I have to tell you I have a Mac and a Dutch Firefox version and I cannot locate Tools-etc in the menu. I came across that before and couldn't find it.

The same thing is happening now in Google Chrome too so prolly malware or smt.

I will definitely check all the malware sites to find something for a mac, I'm running a virusscan now and also It's my bedtime now :)

Check the date of your MAC. Sometimes when the date is wrong it can brings problems with certificates.

I knew about the time settings but they are fine. I wouldn't know why the time would all of a sudden change btw?

What did work was what a friend recommended to me: (in a slightly different way, see my comments in bold letters): Keychain Access (to be found in programs) -> click on Certifcates on the bottom left.

Check to see if any of the certificates on the right have the blue "+" symbol - this means they have custom trust settings. I did not have any blue symbols, mine were a lot of red crosses. Meaning those certificates were not valid any more (since 2012 for most, not sure why I only now have this issue...)

Double-click on each certificate with the custom setting (blue "+") (I only did one), expand the section labelled "trust". Change the "Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)" setting to "no value specified". Close window - you should be prompted for the password. Double-click on the certificate again, expand trust, change the "When using this certificate" setting to "Use System Defaults". Close window, and re-enter password. My settings were already like that so I changed a random one of the certificates to trust always. Not sure if this is safe but now I can open Google and Youtube again. This stuff is a mystery to me.
