A couple of months ago this problem began: On Facebook, when I start a video, it plays for 2-4 seconds and then freezes. Nothing i do can restart it. If I go to You Tube I get the same problem, though it runs a little longer, about 11 seconds. On rare occasions a video will play. I can find no reason for that.

I have disabled hardware acceleration and I have disabled all my plug-ins and extensions (including AdBlock Plus) and restarted Firefox but the problem remains.

I'm running Windows 8.1 with Firefox 34.0.5.

Any help would be appreciated.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test.

Tim, thank you for your suggestion. I'm not sure the exact steps I used to get to it but your troubleshooting suggestion proved the solution. I found that contrary to what I thought I had been doing, I had NOT been updating Windows properly. At least that seems to be the case as it showed that I hadn't updated Windows in almost 10 months. Once I loaded all the updates, the videos started working.

Now to figure out how I have NOT been updating Windows....

Just an FYI update. Though my videos worked after I updated Windows, they soon stopped working again. Over the last couple of weeks Windows updated. The videos played sporadically. Tonight when the video froze, I check my Windows Update icon and found a message that said updates were loaded and would take place when I rebooted. I rebooted, and the video worked. So it seems that whenever Windows automatically updates, it can impact video playback until you activate them.
