Since the latest update, I get pop-ups alot, but my popup blocker does not prevent them, why?

The Firefox pop-up blocker is not very effective. Also, Adblock doesn't block pop-up windows from opening. There's an add-on called Adblock Plus Pop-Up Addon, but it doesn't really do all that much.
