How to play flash videos in Linux?

I would happily be rid of Flash, but some content that I need to access still uses it. In a Linux Mint installation, Flash videos are unavailable and a prompt to update Flash is displayed. I have installed the latest version (which appears to be quite old) both by downloading the .tar file and using the native add-on update in FF but either it is not detected or it is not a sufficient update as I am still getting this prompt.

Is there any way either to use Flash or a substitute?

I have a Linux Mint somewhere.I am sure i would have remembered if Flash Player would not work on Mint. However with all Linux Adobe is only supporting FlashPlayer with security fixes so it is on much lower numbers..

Look at the Adobe test page to check yours works and also to check what the latest version is

You could conceivably have issues on some sites with that version.but does the Adobe test page work ?

I tend to use the bbc news site, that includes short video clips that need FlashPlayer, and those work with Linux

Thanks. The test site detects the version and the animation plays. On other sites, I get the error message: "To watch video, you need an Adobe Flash Player Update. Please click to download." But I have already installed the download to which I am directed.

I used the FF "Refresh" utility yesterday and I am discovering that all kinds of settings and customizations have been clobbered. [Insert cursing here.] This issue with Flash started at the same time.
