Why does messages panel wait 20 seconds to populate?

Why does right hand side messages panel wait 20 seconds to populate when I start Thunderbird? When it first opens, the right side is totally blank, the top bar reads only "Mozilla Thunderbird" (does not have the mailbox name yet). Then, after 20 seconds, suddenly and quickly, the list of messages fills in, the top bar gets the mailbox name added to it, and it hits the pop server looking for new messages.

I have compacted all mailboxes and I have deleted the global database so it would rebuild. No change. I've run in safe mode--same result. I've disabled all extensions--same result.

This started a few months ago. Up until that point, it acted normal.

Driving me nuts; any ideas?

Previous reply disappeared!?? Ah, it wants <10K characters How do we post the troubleshooting info? ...OK, I deleted the printer settings lines.

Yes--POP accounts only, and no change in that from "back when" it worked properly.

Have you tried restarting Thunderbird with add-ons disabled it is on the help menu (alt+H)

more options

Did you see... "I've run in safe mode--same result. I've disabled all extensions--same result."

more options

have you tried windows safe mode with networking? I assumed that was what you meant, but apparently it was Thunderbird safe mode.

Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX

If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

It exhibited the same delay when running in Windows Safe Mode with Networking.

Is the mail file or index fragmented perhaps. The index and mail file get updated all the time, so it might be spread across many fragments slowing access.

more options

Not fragmentation...I run Glary utilities, which keeps disk defragmented.

Also, I compact the files regularly. This started suddenly, and has remained ever since it began happening.
