Hello emmafrom, the new tab page, by default, shows pictures of the sites you visit frequently.
If you want to change that and set a specific page to open when you open a new tab then :
- In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter. The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear.
- Click I'll be careful, I promise!, to continue to the about:config page.
- copy and paste in the search field browser.newtab.url
- double-click on it and type the web page you want
- Click OK, and you are OK. !

thank you
I read about a LOT of different threads with suggestions of what to change in ABOUT:CONFIG for new tabs, and none of them fixed my issue. When I open a new WINDOW, I get the correct result of google.com. When I open a new TAB, I get a page showing ask.com (in lower right of screen, it says "Distributed by Mindspark Interactive Network, Inc". I want both to be google. This just happened when I downloaded some program for getting promo codes. I use AVG, and it doesn't find a virus or adware, but I'm sure that is the issue. I even uninstalled firefox and reinstalled (but I didn't want to lose bookmarks and setting, so I installed it in the way in which I wouldn't lose them). Should I save my bookmarks and uninstall and reinstall with the option to lose all settings/bookmarks maybe?
Hi wq2121, extensions can override the internal newtab setting. Open the Add-ons page using either:
- Windows: Ctrl+Shift+a
- Mac: Command+Shift+a
- "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then on the right side, disable everything you do not expect to use during the next 24 hours, or anything unnecessary or unrecognized.
That change should take effect the next time you exit and start Firefox up again.
Meanwhile, if you installed software and got unintended consequences you should check for malware. Assuming you run Windows, open the Control Panel to Uninstall a Program (or Add/Remove Programs). Click the "Installed on" column heading to group entries by date. This should help in finding and removing the recent bundled items. Or the entire recent installation if you no longer trust that publisher.
