Thunderbird Intermittant play a sound when new messages arrive

Sometimes the sound plays when new messages arrive. However, it seems more often than not, it does not always play when new messages arrive.

I've tried both the default system sound for new email and "Use the following sound file" option. I get the same result in either case.
