Firefox 66 was causing a problem so I tried to back off to Firefox 65 as per the support page "Install an older version of Firefox". I ran "Firefox Setup 65.0.2.exe" which installed what I wanted. But I cannot prevent it from updating again to FF 66 when I restart.

I tried setting the option to turn off the automatic update as soon as I installed FF65, but it seems to have no effect. When I open the About box, it already tells me to restart to update.

How can I keep FF65 without updating. I don't mind making an edit to prefs.js before I start FF, but I just can't get a clear picture of what to do.

What problems are you having in Firefox 66? It is not safe to disable updates, so let's fix what you are having a problem with rather than disable updates

My Bookmarks toolbar is no longer on multiple lines. I've been using CustomCSSforFx userChrome and every major update to FF causes something to no longer work. I just don't have time today to deal with it.

Same kind of issue occurred when I updated from FF64 to FF65. Then, I could back off to 64, turn off the updates and it worked.

I'm fine with it telling me when there is an update, but I just want to stay on 65 for now.

You can fix your userChrome. https://www.reddit.com/r/FirefoxCSS/comments/b4557k/firefox_66_multi_row_broken_infinite/

Note that userChrome.css is a hack, and it's not guaranteed to be supported.

I understand about userChrome.css and I will check your link. But meanwhile, there are times I would like to restore a prior version and it now appears Firefox will not allow that at all. Am I correct? I would think that something could be set before starting FF to prevent the automatic update.

Running an out of date version of Firefox has never been supported. You should always have the latest version

Starting with Firefox 66, there is a note where the update option is configured to say "This setting will apply to all Windows accounts and Firefox profiles using this installation of Firefox." So something in the update process has changed.

So back to my original concern... is it possible, or impossible, to restore Firefox back to 65?

You would at least have to uninstall the Mozilla maintenance service (MMS) to prevent installing updates in the background and also not open "Help -> About Firefox" because this triggers an update check.

Here are the steps I ran... 1. In Firefox 66: "Check for updates but let you choose to install them " is selected 2. Close Firefox 3. Uninstall Mozilla Maintenance Service 4. Uninstall Firefox 66 5. Run Firefox Setup 65.0.2.exe (without installing maintenance service) 6. Launch Firefox 65 7. Select option "Check for updates but let you choose to install them" 8. Exit Firefox 9. Launch Firefox At this point it automatically updates to Firefox 66! "Check for updates but let you choose to install them" is still selected. Something is not right.
