How do I make my Firefox sync? As in, does it do it automatically or do I have to press a button to make it record all my stuff. I see a button on the menu thing but I don't want to press it in case it downloads a previous version of my set up.

Sync is made to work automatically. When Firefox is opened Sync in Firefox will contact the Sync server to look for "updated" data from the other devices which are connected to that Firefox Account. And as data is added or removed from the Firefox installation you are using that data change is sent to the Sync server.

But you need to be logged into your Firefox Account for that to work. When you are logged into your Firefox Account the email address that you use for the Firefox Account (your usename for Sync) will show at the top of the Menu panel , which is what you get when you use the 3-bar toolbar button (labled Open menu on cursor hover). A dual-circular arrow appears to the right of that email address, which will "spin" when Firefox is communicating with the Sync server. That "dual-circular arrow " also serves as a button for doing a manual sync event; upon cursor hover that "button" will show the Day and Time of the last sync event, either automatic or manual.

As far as "version of your setup", Sync keeps one "version" of data merged from the connected devices. No backups and no "data points" for restoration, Sync is not a Cloud for accumulating data from a specific data / time for archival purposes.
