My Firefox Start displays a collection of buttons (download, add-ons, sync,not bookmarks,etc.) that I do not need cluttering up my page. How do I remove them or the display?

Use about:blank as your home page.

The bottom of the Firefox Start Page is known as launcher. This UserStyle will hide the launcher portion of the Start Page.
