getting mail locks up gui after hibernate

When Thunderbird is open, and the computer goes into hibernate mode, when it wakes up Thunderbird locks up when I press "Get Messages". The mailbox is checked, I get a ding sound when mail arrives, and the popup window appears, but the popup is blank and No Messages appear in the main gui. Then I cannot get any response from clicking in the gui or the popup, and have to close Thunderbird and restart. This problem Only happened after I got the most recent upgrade to V 38.2.0. I am using Win7sp1 on Intel Core i5-3470cpu 8GB mem (64bit). I have had absolutely No problems with Thunderbird since I started using it over 4 yrs ago, but this last upgrade started this lock up problem.
