Do a clean (re)install and delete the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Uninstall your current Firefox version if possible.

  • Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data in the profile folder.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

Thanks for your help but Firefox has already been uninstalled, probably over a year ago as it was giving problems with one of my McAfee security features and I can find absolutely no trace of any Firefox or Mozilla folders or programmes on my system. Since then I have had some security problems with Internet Explorer - used Google Chrome for a while but that is now also giving problems so thought I'd have another try using Firefox as, apart from the problem outlined above I didn't have any other trouble with it. I have tried, time after time, over a period of many weeks, to reinstall Firefox but the result is always the same - as previously explained - 'system needs to reboot to remove previously installed version' !!! although there isn't one !!! At least, not that I can find !!! Running Windows Vista, Home Premium. Cheers
