I repeatedly attempt to install the plugin for Adobe Flash player but, despite scree feedback that indicates that pludin and flash player have been successfully installed, I find they have not been.

This is my first day w/Firefox browser. Thought I has escaped the Evil Empire and that Firefox would do less but better. This is a disappointing first experience.

Try using the manual installer to install Flash, for details see http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/191/tn_19166.html#main_ManualInstaller
The link that you show is for the Adobe Reader and not the Abode Flash player

Your system details show the Adobe Reader, so you succeeded in installing that plugin.
Your plugins list shows outdated plugin(s) with known security and stability risks.
