have you tried the suggestions in the respective support articles.
See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cannot-send-messages and https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/cannot-receive-messages
My personal guess is if this occurred immediately after an update you probably have an antivirus problem, not a Thunderbird one. If you use any antivirus other that windows defender, try uninstalling it to see if mail just starts working again. Defender will protect you after the uninstall
I have gone through the normal troubleshooting practices prior to posting here (checking internet connection, checking email account information (address, password, etc), restarting thunderbird, etc) note: there were no issues prior to the update
thank you for the articles
per the articles
1) disabled VPN - same issue (failed sending test email)
2) disabled AVG antivirus - same issue (failed sending test email)
3) checked firewall (thunderbird was NOT allowed) - same issue (failed sending test email)
4) added thunderbird to the outgoing and incoming - same issue (failed sending test email)
5) disabled firewall - same issue (failed sending test email)
all the IMAP use port 993 and are mostly gmail accounts (I did check both SMTP servers send/rec email - same fail) SMTP uses 465
so everything failed i had to remove thunderbird completely reinstall thunderbird and recreate my accounts (that sucked!!!)
everything works now, except my calendars are all messed up (they all say calendars temporarily not available) i do not like this new version so far
re :checked firewall (thunderbird was NOT allowed) Thunderbird should be set up as an allowed program to ensure it works and is not being blocked.
re :disabled VPN Good idea as you use gmail. Gmail does not like it if you have a VPN because it hides your IP address.
AVG: AS it is likely to be controlling the Firewall, if you disable it, then it's likely the Windows default Firewall will take over, so it's better to just set Thunderbird as allowed program in Firewall.
AVG is often a problem. The AVG support forum often has these types of reports and disabling the Email shield fixes most receiving and sending issues.
re :(they all say calendars temporarily not available) Who is 'they' ? If you get error could you upload an image file showing the error and where it appears.
Home calendar - the default in Thunderbird - is that calendar ok ? GMAIL - I've managed to get my basic gmail calendar and the Holidays calendar working, but currently can't see the others eg: Birthdays. in the list.
I've also used Thunderbird add-on - Provider for Google Calendar 128.5.12 https://services.addons.thunderbird.net/eN-US/thunderbird/addon/provider-for-google-calendar/ It has allowed me to also see 'Tasks'.
