Can receive emails but cannot send them with Office 365 university account
Hello,
I am trying to set up my university email account to work with thunderbird. I am using the following settings.
Server Settings
IMAP Mail Server Server Name: outlook.office365.com Port: 993 User Name: name@university.com Connection security: SSL/TLS Authentication method: = OAuth2
SMTP Server Settings Server Name: smtp.office365.com Port: 587 Connection security: STARTTLS Authentication method: OAuth2 User Name: name@university.com
The error that I get when sending emails is
Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.office365.com timed out. Try again.
I can receive emails with no problems.
I tried many different solutions:
- changing the SMTP server settings
- disabling the firewall
- changing Linux distribution
- reinstalling thunderbird
- removing and adding again the account
- removing and adding again the password
But nothing work. I really like thunderbird and would like to keep it (the web version of outlook is not great in my opinion)
Could you help me?
Thanks in advance

“Sending failed. Message couldn’t be sent because the connection to the outgoing server SMTP timed out. Try again.”
If you search for the string "the connection to the outgoing server SMTP timed out" in the top right search field, there will be numerous articles with information about how to resolve this issue.
The most common solution is that Anti-Virus software needs to be switched off from scanning emails.
If the solutions offered don't work, please reply to the post and it will be relisted as in need of a solution.
If you use Thunderbird 132+, the settings of "security.tls.enable_kyber" might cause. As I had met the same issue, turning "security.tls.enable_kyber" false solved it.
Same config as in the initial question.
Similar problem: I cannot send emails (while POP receiving works fine). However, when sending, I do NOT receive any error message. The mail appears in the outbox as "sent", but is not processed by the mail server = never arrives at destination.
This problem appeared suddenly after two years of normal operation.
I already contacted the IT department to look at options from https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/microsoft-oauth-authentication-and-thunderbird-202 but they are slow in response. Therefore I still would like to know if there is anything I can do at my Thunderbird Client side.
