I want to put my bookmarks from my old computer to the new one

I want to put my bookmarks from my old computer to the new one

Chosen solution

Bookmarks - Show All Bookmarks - Import and Backup - Export Bookmarks to HTML

Then where ever you have that file saved, either put it on a floppy/burn to a cd disk, or email it to yourself. After that, just put the file on your new computer. Once FF is downloaded on your new computer follow the steps I mentioned but instead of Exporting, you'll select "Import Bookmarks from HTML" and all your bookmarks should be there. :)

Hi lemel,

is there a file that has bookmarks
I want to put my bookmarks from my old computer to the new one

Yes there is.

  • Are we talking about Firefox browsers here ?
  • Are both computers still working & running Firefox ?
  • I assume you have a lot of bookmarks on the old computer and a few on the new one/

If so

  • Remember it is important to always backup bookmarks before doing any restore. The standard imports over write and so destroy existing bookmarks.
    • and Sync not a backup service, although the synced backups allow you to consider the 2nd device as a backup.
  1. Backup the bookmarks on the old computer as Mozilla(.json) backups
Use: Library ->Backup and Restore-> Backup
This type have more information such as tags and overwrite existing bookmarks
  2. Backup by exporting the few new bookmarks on the new computer as .html
    (like on IE favourites)
Use: Library ->Backup and Restore ->Export
    • For any future backups use the backup method NOT the export method
  3. Restore bookmarks from the old to new computer.
  4. Now import the few bookmarks you exported earlier.
This type append. Effectively they tack on to the end of the existing bookmarks without overwriting anything.
  5. You may wish to backup your complete set now, and after any major editing, then at regular intervals.

There are methods involving hacking with Files, but it is best to use the above method if possible.

Do both computers have the same Operating System?

You can also restore the bookmarks from a JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups or create such a backup yourself.

Note that restoring a JSON backup will replace all existing bookmarks.
A JSON backup also includes tags and other annotations that you lose when you import an HTML backup.
An HTML backup includes the favicons that a JSON backup doesn't include, so there is a trade off.

Note that you can recover more data (e.g. passwords and other saved form data).
