in upgrate 22 and 23.0 the bookmarks toolbar dissapears and after crashing firefox does not allow for recovery

I hate this new upgrade. I basically can't use this browser anymore. I only need firefox to do a few things correctly but if it cannot do these things I cannot use it
1. If firefox crashes (which it does every 30 minutes it just closes completely) then I need for it to be able to restore / recover all previously opened windows when I start it back up again. It does not do this anymore.
2. I use the bookmarks toolbar all the time but frequently it shows up completely blank. So now the only way I can see the bookmarks is if I go to options and deselect bookmarks toolbar and then reselect bookmarks toolbar.

This is so frustrating and worse you make it so you cant do rollbacks! That is insulting and makes me want to not use your browser. A browser is a critical tool not a toy but you guys won't stop playing with it.

Also, in case old extension versions have bugs, you can update using:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > "gear" button > "Check for Updates"

E.g., GM 1.5 (Nov. 2012) vs. GM 1.11 (July 2013).

Hi joshuad31,

Sorry you are having problems. It should not be crashing and should not be messing up your bookmarks. I do not have any such problems.

  • If Firefox is actually crashing, as opposed to hanging then a couple of the Crash IDs would help.
  • if firefox has been frequently hanging and restarting offering the option to restore sessions then that has probably overloaded the session restore and you will need to delete the multiple copies of files.

To get Firefox running again you may initially need to use Firefox's safemode and disable all your plugins. Or do a reset.

I note you have VMware, scripting software and an enterprise edition extension. Is this machine used in an enterprise / corporate environment ?

I will deal with the bookmarks toolbar issue later, crashing/hanging is a higher priority.

I don't care if it crashes. Its javascript that is unstable but what I do care about is the ability to recover from crashes. Can't I instal an app that will show you what I am experiencing?

Regarding session restore, is the "Restore Previous Session" item grayed out on the History menu when you restart Firefox?

I've read in the past about problems with the sessionstore data files. File locks or perhaps other conditions will cause Firefox to start saving numbered sessionstore files that do not restore correctly. Can you check for any of those and move them out of your profile folder?

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using

Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button

Look for files starting with sessionstore and copy them all to a safe location for possible future reference

Return the window to viewing your profile folder, then switch back to Firefox and exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then check the timestamps. Delete all but the most recent sessionstore file and make sure that one is named sessionstore.js.

When you restart Firefox, is the session restored as expected?

Regarding the bookmarks toolbar, I'd try regenerating the data file that stores your toolbar data. Unfortunately, this returns them to defaults so you will need to re-customize.

Back to the profile folder...

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using

Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button

Switch back to Firefox and Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename localstore.rdf to something like localstore.old

Restart Firefox.

Any improvement with the bookmarks toolbar? If not, you can reverse the above process (replace the new localstore.rdf with the old one).

If you have submitted crash reports then please post the IDs of one or more recent crash reports that have a "bp-" prefix:

  • bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx

You can find the IDs of the submitted crash reports on the about:crashes page.

  • You can open the about:crashes page via the location bar, like you open a website, or open the crash reports page via "Help > Troubleshooting Information".

ok so I was able to see a positive return to my previous experience once these extensions were disabled:

Default Full Zoom Level 5.0 Greasefire 1.0.8 Greasemonkey 1.5 Stylish 1.3

Again all I want is that when javascript causes the browser to crash I can restart / restore all my windows upon relaunch and I want it so that the bookmarks toolbar always displays correctly. Disabling these extensions did the trick for me.

If you rely on Greasemonkey and Stylish for some userscripts and userstyles, another option would be to re-enable the extensions disable any nonessential scripts/styles here:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > User Scripts category
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > User Styles category
