how do i stop .pdfs automatically saving in downloads folder

How can I stop firefox automatically saving .pdf documents into my downloads folder.
I open and use hundreds of .pdf documents everyday, and my downloads folder is at capacity with my viewed pdf's.
please help.

When I open a file with an application, why is it also saved to my Downloads folder? Before Firefox version 98, files you opened in Firefox with an application were also saved to the system Temp folder on Windows and Linux, even though you may not have been aware of it.

You can try 1 - Go to configuration editor https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/about-config-editor-firefox 2 - Enter a search term browser.download.start_downloads_in_tmp_dir You can double-click on the preference to set the value to true
